Joseph Whistler Revillon was born in 1886 and was the great-nephew of the painter James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). He spent his early life as a civil engineer in Russia. When he retired to Suffolk, England, in the 1940s he began work on a catalogue of Whistler's oil painters amassing in addition a considerable body of material relating to the Whistler family.
